NOT CONFIRMED as there is another service number noted for one G.L Barker noted in the 59 Sqn ORB. (see below). Itr is possible that Sgt Barker went on to earn his wings later in his service, this did become an option to aircrew.

59 Sqn ORB - 30/09/1940 - Notes that 517937 (pos. error) Sgt Barker G.L and 625116 Sgt Dunlop, C.E.A were awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal for gallantry and devotion to duty in operations againsty the enemy.

The award was most likely given in relation to a sortie flown on the 30th of April, 1940 which was 59 Squadron's first for the war. The pilot, P/O N.B. Hallmark received a D.F.C and was later promoted to the rank of Squadron Leader, then posted to a new squadron for flying duties.

He was crew with P/O Ayres during the Battle of Britain.
